An indicator handle in MQL5 is not a moving average, an oscillator reading or a trading signal. It is a reference to an indicator calculation managed by the platform. The numerical observations live in indicator buffers, which a program must request separately before making a decision.

For meta trader 5 automation, confusing those two objects can produce errors that a chart will not expose. A handle may be valid while its requested data is incomplete, outdated or taken from the wrong bar.

A Valid Handle Does Not Guarantee Available Data

Functions such as iMA and iRSI return handles identifying indicator instances. They do not return the latest indicator value. A program normally obtains readings through CopyBuffer, after checking that the handle is not INVALID_HANDLE and that sufficient bars have been calculated.

Immediately after initialization or a symbol change, indicator history may still be loading. BarsCalculated can help establish readiness, while the number of elements actually returned by CopyBuffer determines whether the request succeeded. Treating an empty result as a zero-valued signal could activate a strategy at precisely the wrong moment.

Buffer Positions Can Reverse the Intended Signal

CopyBuffer identifies indicator lines by buffer number and observations by their position relative to the current bar. Position zero refers to the forming bar, whose value can change before the candle closes. Position one refers to the most recently completed bar.

An algorithm designed to trade confirmed moving-average crosses may behave differently if it reads position zero. Intrabar fluctuations can create a crossover that disappears by the close, even though the historical chart later shows no completed-bar signal. Document whether each rule requires a live reading or a closed candle, and verify how copied arrays are indexed before comparing values.

Incorrect Readings Can Produce Measurable CFD Losses

Imagine a hypothetical cocoa-processing company share CFD quoted at $46.00, with each CFD representing one share. An automated strategy intends to buy 300 units only after a completed-bar indicator confirms an upward trend. Its developer mistakenly treats a temporary reading from the current bar as confirmation and buys at $46.00.

The candle then closes without the required signal. By the time the program’s exit condition triggers, the executable bid has fallen to $44.80. Selling 300 units realizes a $360 loss before charges: $1.20 per unit multiplied by 300. The discrepancy is not a defective moving-average formula. It comes from confusing the availability of a live buffer value with confirmation of the strategy’s required observation.

Recreating Handles Can Consume Resources Without Improving Accuracy

Creating a fresh indicator handle on every tick may appear safer than retaining an existing one. In practice, repeated construction adds unnecessary overhead and can complicate resource management. A stable handle created during initialization is generally more suitable for repeated reads, with IndicatorRelease used when the resource is no longer needed.

For meta trader 5 applications running multiple indicators across many symbols, disciplined handle ownership also makes failures easier to isolate. Keep the handle associated with its intended symbol, timeframe and parameters; a valid reference to the wrong configuration is still unsuitable for the trading rule.

Multi-Buffer Indicators Require Explicit Line Selection

Indicators such as MACD and Bollinger Bands expose more than one output buffer. Reading the wrong buffer can substitute a signal line for a main line or a band boundary for a central value. The returned number may look plausible, so a simple success check will not detect the semantic error.

Before opening a CFD through an Expert Advisor, inspect the indicator’s buffer definitions, log the selected buffer number and bar shift, and run a demo test comparing copied values with the intended plotted line. Require a successful data-read check before permitting an order.
