Friday evening arrives, the working week is done, and the open road starts calling. A survey of UK drivers found that 61 percent were thinking about a road trip at home, and we can see why. Sunderland sits in a lovely spot for short breaks, with coast, forest, moorland and lakes all within a few hours. Owners of VW Campervans in Sunderland know the joy of packing up on a Friday and waking somewhere new on Saturday.

You do not need a huge budget to join them. A well-kept older van gives you the same freedom as a new one, and here at Crowther Lodge Motor Company, we meet plenty of first-time owners who began with a VW camper van for sale used. Below are four weekend trips we love, each with a handy tip.

Bamburgh and Holy Island on the Northumberland Coast

Head north up the A1, and in around an hour and a half, you reach some of the finest beaches in England. Bamburgh Castle towers over wide golden sands, while Seahouses is the place for fish and chips. On Saturday, cross over to Holy Island. Always check the tide times first, as the causeway floods twice a day, and drivers still get caught out. A compact Transporter feels right at home on these narrow coastal lanes.

Stargazing in Kielder Forest

For something quieter, drive west to Kielder. It sits within Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, home to some of the darkest skies in England. Raise the roof, brew a hot drink and watch the Milky Way appear on a clear night. Pack an extra layer, because it turns cold after dark even in July. Days are for forest trails and walks around Kielder Water.

Whitby and the North York Moors

Turn south, and the scenery changes completely. The road over the moors is all heather, sheep and long views before you drop down into Whitby. Climb the 199 steps to the abbey, then grab a spot on the harbour wall. Many car parks along this coast have height barriers, so know your van’s height before you set off. A pop-top with the roof down slips under far more of them than a high-roof build.

Over the Pennines to the Lake District

The Lakes take a little over two hours. Keswick, Derwentwater and Ullswater make a perfect base for a long weekend. Book your campsite early in summer, as the best pitches go fast. Steep fell roads are where a reliable van really earns its keep, which is why every VW camper van for sale used on our forecourt is inspected to AA approved standards before it leaves us. Our on-site team also handles servicing, so a quick check before a bigger trip is easy to arrange.

Conclusion

Coast, stars, moors or mountains, the best part is that you choose on Friday, not months ahead. For anyone looking at VW Campervans in Sunderland, our showroom on Park Road, just off the Felling Bypass in Gateshead, is only a short drive away. Come and sit in a few layouts, and talk through finance or part exchange with no pressure. We are open seven days a week, or you can call us on 0191 490 1734 to arrange a viewing. Your first weekend away could be closer than you think.
