How to Open a Post Office Fixed Deposit Online in 2026: Latest Process

ravifernandes152 August 13, 2026

When it comes to managing my savings, I always look for simple ways to earn safe, steady returns without unnecessary risk. For generations, government savings programs have been a go-to choice for low-risk investing in India. Among these, the Post Office Time Deposit—often called a post office fixed deposit—stands out because it offers strong interest rates fully backed by the Government of India.

In the past, opening one meant taking a trip to the local branch and standing in long lines. Fortunately, thanks to India Post’s updated online banking system (ebanking.indiapost.gov.in), you can now set up your deposit completely online. Having used the portal myself, I can tell you that it saves a tremendous amount of time. Here is a straightforward guide on how you can open your deposit online in 2026.

What You Need Before You Start

Before sitting down to open your deposit online, I recommend making sure you have these basic requirements ready:

  • Active Savings Account: You need an active single or joint Post Office Savings Account.
  • Internet Banking Access: Your post office savings account must have internet banking activated, along with your Login Password and Transaction Password.
  • Updated Details: Your account needs up-to-date KYC information, including a registered mobile number, email address, and linked PAN card.

Step-by-Step Guide to Opening Your Deposit Online

Once your internet banking is set up, the entire process takes only a few minutes. Here is how I do it:

1. Log In to India Post Internet Banking

Go to the official portal (ebanking.indiapost.gov.in) and log in with your User ID (found as the CIF ID on your passbook) and login password. Enter the one-time password (OTP) sent to your mobile phone.

2. Find the Service Request Option

Look at the top menu bar on your dashboard and click on General Services. From there, select Service Request and then click New Request.

3. Pick Your Deposit Details

Select Open a TD Account (Time Deposit) from the options. You will then fill in a few basic details:

  • Tenure: Pick how long you want to invest—1 year, 2 years, 3 years, or 5 years.
  • Amount: Enter the money you want to deposit (starting at ₹1,000, and in multiples of ₹100).
  • Source Account: Choose your post office savings account as the source for the funds.

4. Review and Confirm

Check the interest rate, maturity date, and nominee details to make sure everything looks correct. Enter your Transaction Password to complete the application.

Once submitted, the system produces an official digital Fixed Deposit Receipt. You can easily download or print this document for your records.

Important Features to Keep in Mind

Managing a fixed deposit account online comes with a few great advantages and rules worth knowing:

  • Tax Savings: If you choose a 5-year deposit, your investment is eligible for tax deductions under Section 80C (up to ₹1,50,000 per tax year).
  • Easy Online Tracking: You do not need to keep track of physical paper certificates. Your account portal shows your active deposits, interest schedules, and receipts whenever you log in.
  • Interest Payouts: Interest is calculated every quarter but paid out directly into your main savings account once a year.

Using online banking makes growing your money simple, convenient, and completely secure.
